Mesothelioma vs. Lung Cancer
Although malignant mesothelioma is considered cancerous, it’s not categorized as lung cancer. Read on to learn the differences and similarities between the two respiratory health issues.
The Development of Mesothelioma is Different Than Lung Cancer
The development of mesothelioma and lung cancer are very different. Mesothelioma is a respiratory illness that is specifically related to asbestos exposure. According to the American Cancer Society, roughly 8 out of 10 people with mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos. Some people exposed to asbestos can also develop lung cancer; however, the top risk factor for lung cancer is smoking and using tobacco products.
The latency periods are also very different:
- Lung Cancer: depending on the type of lung cancer, it can take up to 8 years to develop.
- Mesothelioma: can take between 20 and 50 years to develop.
